How Does One Catch It?

The pneumococcus bacterium travels from one person to the next through the air. When a sick person coughs or sneezes, he sprays the bacteria into the air. An unsuspecting person nearby may breathe in the bacteria and get sick.

Alert

What is so sneaky about this bacterium is that it can live in people’s noses without making them sick. Just because the people around you do not appear sick does not mean that you will not get sick from them. Many people harbor this bacterium in their nose without realizing it.

While the pneumococcus bacterium is not as contagious as chickenpox or measles, it can still be passed quite readily through coughing and sneezing. Patients with pneumococcal infections should be quarantined to prevent an outbreak. Other than isolating yourself completely from any human contact, there is no effective way to always avoid getting exposed to the pneumococcus bacterium.
